Dreamers looking to the stars fueled the beginnings of 蹤獲絢app (UAH) more than 75 years ago. A new historical marker at Campus No. 805, site of the first classes on Jan. 6, 1950, commemorates the original 137 students and honors UAHs development and dedication to that research-focused vision.

UAH President Dr. Charles Karr recalled those students on Dec. 16, 2025, when UAH representatives and supporters gathered to unveil the marker and celebrate the universitys history, milestones and plans for the future. He thanked Barbara Wadsworth, a proud 蹤獲絢app supporter, for her vision and generosity in donating the marker as well as the UAH Foundation Board for helping to make the event possible.

We started as a research entity, an extension center of The University of Alabama (UA), Karr said. In 1969, we became our own university.

Now UAH, a part of the UA System, is one of Americas premier doctoral-granting, research-intensive universities and home to 17 research centers. Its come a long way since November 1949 when, as the marker notes, UA approved the creation of the University of Alabama-Huntsville Center.

Today UAH has almost 9,000 students, Karr said. But weve held true to that mission of research. Last year our faculty and staff conducted about $160 million in externally funded research. This research helps us produce outstanding graduates who provide the workforce for people here in Huntsville.

蹤獲絢app continues growing toward even greater goals. Karr pointed out new and ongoing building and renovation projects that will move the university forward in 2026 and beyond:

  • Completing the Raymond B. Jones Engineering Building, expected this summer.
  • Renovating the Bevill Center for the new Center for Cybersecurity Research, Education & Advanced Training.
  • Building UAHs first Track and Field Complex.
  • Redeveloping the former Executive Plaza site into Exploration Plaza with residence, office and research buildings in the first phase.

Wadsworth has long been a cheerleader for UAH and its vital role in Huntsvilles history.

I couldnt understand why there wasnt already a marker in place, she said. This is an important historic development for the city and its progress.

Wadsworth said shes considered UAH a community brain trust for as long as shes called Huntsville home. She and her late husband, E.J. Butch Wadsworth, moved to town when he joined Boeing as a defense contractor. She worked as a retail store manager and training store manager with the furniture company This End Up for 19 years. After that store closed, she worked for the Bombay Company.

She remembers unusual questions from customers employed in engineering and scientific fields.

They might ask what type of polymers were in the chairs. We sold bunk beds, and there was a man who wanted to know what the tensile strength of the wood was per board foot. I told him, I havent calculated that lately, but let me get back to you. Id call corporate headquarters, and theyd say, What? Is he a rocket scientist? And Id say, Yeah, he is.

Its a little bit different when youre selling in Huntsville, but thats part of the spirit, the atmosphere of Huntsville and of UAH. Details like that are what I like to share with people because it gives them an idea of the whole picture.

The faculty and staff of UAHs M. Louis Salmon Library are dedicated to keeping track of the universitys historic details. Library Director David Moore recognized those who worked on the marker project and added his thanks for Wadsworths gift.

I want to recognize one of our grad students, Kyle Curtis. He wrote the lettering for the marker and did some research on that using our archives. I also want to give a shout out to Reagan Grimsley, head of Special Collections and Archives, and Drew Adan, university archivist, for their work on this project to get it going.

Most of all, thank you, Barbara, for your idea and your initiatives moving this forward. We are all here as great champions of UAH, and I think this recognizes the work that we are doing and will continue to do. There are great days ahead for the university. Thank you for your support.

Important Updates to Our Proxy Server: How This Impacts You and What to Look for /library/about/library-news/19470-important-updates-to-our-proxy-server-how-this-impacts-you-and-what-to-look-for /library/about/library-news/19470-important-updates-to-our-proxy-server-how-this-impacts-you-and-what-to-look-for The Salmon Library has migrated the proxy server to a new domain and this will potential impact access to certain links and resources. Find out what updates you might need to avoid interruption.

On May 7, 2025 the M. Louis Salmon Library activated the new EZProxy server hosted directly by . This change will be very beneficial to not only the M. Louis Salmon Library but to the entire University of Alabama in Huntsville community. This new proxy server:

  • Improves ease of maintenance and enhances up-time;
  • Improves access to online materials and ensures the librarys large collection of online materials remains just a few clicks away;
  • Helps the library collection to stay more responsive to rapid changes in security and privacy.

For those accessing the M. Louis Salmon Librarys materials through the or through the there will be virtually no change for the end user. The necessary information and redirects have already been loaded.

However, those who have persistent links (also called permanent links) or bookmarks to the old materials might have to update their links to keep them valid going forward depending on if those links directly included or encoded the old proxy servers information into the link..

THINGS TO LOOK FOR

The old proxy links were of the elib.uah.edu formation. Examples might include

  • https://elib.uah.edu/login?url=https://www.jstor.org/stable/20441734

Those links need to be updated to the new proxy server address: uah.idm.oclc.org

  • https://uah.idm.oclc.org/login?url=https://www.jstor.org/stable/20441734

Any old link using elib.uah.edu will need to be updated.

THINGS WHICH MIGHT BE IMPACTED

The following items might include links to the old proxy server:

  • Bookmarks stored on your browser(s) or any sort of link aggregator or bookmark manager.
  • Handouts including direct links to library resources.
  • Syllabi and other Canvas course materials that had direct links to library resources.
  • Descriptions in videos recorded and posted for classes if those included links to the library's subscription services.
  • Online pages that had links to resources.
  • Articles, Conference Papers, Dissertations, and Theses that had URLs included for the articles cited.
  • Citation Managers and similar tools that allowed proxy server information to be included in their settings or were stored in the files.

Other online and print resources might also have the proxy server stored, depending on how extensively you used proxied resources and included the whole link.

THINGS NOT IMPACTED

Note that not all links had the proxy embedded. Some of the librarys online resources do not include the proxy server in their URL. For example, the above linked article, if accessed through Primo Pathfinder (the librarys discovery service and default search) has this link:

Since that does not include the elib.uah.edu, it will remain fully functional as is.

Other things not impacted include:

  • Open-Access materials that do not require the proxy server.
  • Links to public resources such as .gov websites that do not require proxied access.
  • Other "open web" resources (newspapers, archives, and other materials) that do not require subscription.
  • DOIs that were not edited to include the elib.uah.edu. Note, if the DOI was edited to include the old proxy server, it will need to be updated.
  • Other methods of accessing the files such as full citations that did not include the link to the proxy server in the citation.

For more information, see the Persistent Links LibGuide:

IF YOU NEED HELP

The M. Louis Salmon Library librarians would be glad to help you to update your online and course materials to reflect this change.

Your liaison librarian will be a great resource during this transition. If you do not know which subject specialist works with your college or department, then view the linked page to find the librarian to best assist you: /library/research/subject-specialists.

If you prefer, reach out to the Research Help Desk:

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Can I continue to use the old proxy server?

No. While the M. Louis Salmon Library is working with OIT to allow a bit of a grace period to redirect old links, it is a temporary measure to continue some access but over the next few months this will cease and links not updated to the new proxy server address will no longer work.

If I have previously used the old proxy server, will it interfere with the new one?

It should not. While they are virtually identical experiences for the end user and based on the same technology and settings, they are two different servers so your browser and the vendors should see them as completely separate entities.

What do I do if I have issues with the new proxy server?

Reach out to refdesk@uah.edu and let the library know.

There were bunny ears, storybooks and lots of giggles as 蹤獲絢app (UAH) welcomed a very special group of guestslocal second-gradersfor the first-ever Hop into Learning: A Bunny Discovery Educational Day on April 25. UAH is a part of The University of Alabama System.

Hosted at the UAH Salmon Library and led by a team of UAH faculty, staff and students, this educational initiative provided a magical mix of bunny-themed literature and interactive, standards-based learning activities, all aimed at nurturing a love of reading among young students. It was created by Dr. Hamsa Mahafza, Clinical Assistant Professor of Curriculum and Instruction at UAH. Inspired by her love for bunnies and passion for writing childrens books, Dr. Mahafza developed the concept as part of the College of Educations Reading for Pleasure initiativea program focused on sparking curiosity, encouraging creativity, and cultivating lifelong reading habits.

A group of four individuals in green shirts engages in discussion around a display at a community event, surrounded by informational booths.

Reading is such a powerful thing, and when children learn to read for fun not just as part of a school assignment it encourages lifelong reading habits said Dr. Mahafza. We wanted to create a day that helps children fall in love with books, using something as simple and adorable as a bunny to provide a meaningful context and a joyful reading experience.

The event enhanced community engagement, with one of the most popular stations showcasing live rabbits from , a local rabbit rescue organization. Students met different breeds, learned about rabbit care, and took photosfostering empathy and curiosity through hands-on learning. UAHs mascot, Charger Blue, also made a special appearance, cheering on participants and adding excitement to the day.

Each interactive station encouraged storytelling, creativity and critical thinking while also serving as a professional development opportunity for UAH College of Education students, who facilitated the activities and gained valuable teaching experience in a real-world setting.

As a keepsake, each child received a bunny-themed coloring book titled Lets Hop into Learning, authored by Dr. Mahafza, sponsored by the UAH Library and designed by UAHs Office of Marketing and Communications. The book symbolized the events collaborative spirit and gave students a tangible reminder of their day.

Research shows that reading for pleasure significantly contributes to childrens cognitive, emotional, and social development, said Dr. Mahafza. It promotes motivation, supports literacy growth and encourages a lifelong appreciation for reading among emergent readers.

With this in mind, the Hop into Learning initiative is set to become a spring tradition at UAH, continuing to blend literacy, creativity, and a little bunny magic for years to come.
